The Study United Vision
Here at Study United we believe that the school gates and timetable will cease to be barriers to learning. Study United at Scunthorpe United Football Club will provide the motivation for young people to enter a new era of lifelong learning and develop useful key skills.
A brief history of Study Support at Scunthorpe United Football Club...

Study United FC proudly opened the doors to the newly built Learning Centre, to welcome the first cohort of young people in early September 2003. Staff and friends, all of whom had worked tremendously hard during the summer to ensure the Centre opened on time, were rewarded by the excited sounds of "Wowww!" as the young people went through the doors for the first time. Sited as it is at the heart of Glanford Park, the team are pleased to say that the exciting environment still continues to thrill visitors, young and old.
This excitement is also reflected in the variety of projects that have run throughout the year.
The PfS sessions that run twice nightly, four times a week have focused on a range of themes intended to raise attainment in numeracy, literacy, whilst improving IT skills. One group of Year 8 pupils worked on producing a newspaper during their 10-week stint at the Centre. However, the project was provided with added impetus and meaning as the pupils worked to real-time deadlines, ably aided and abetted by the services of the retired editor of the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph, to produce an actual supplement that went out with the local newspaper.
Day-time provision continued as previously provided, working with amongst others, KS4 students at risk of disaffection through projects including Engage, Pathfinder and, new for this year, Heading for Success,- learning support students working towards gaining basic skills qualifications.
However, new day-time projects have included Applied GCSE modules, work with Vulnerable Children and a number of Challenge Days including the Circus Day, for Gifted & Talented pupils, Years 1 through to Year 6. The diversity brought about by the wide range in ages provided a challenge for the teachers delivering the session as well!
To cope with the ever expanding time-table of activities at Study United there is now a permanent team of five, including a Centre Manager, full-time PfS teacher, operational support officer, IT Technician/Content Manager and a teacher for vulnerable children in the looked after system. This is complimented by a greatly appreciated group of ´Study Supporters´, volunteers from the local college and wider community, who together help to provide a memorable experience for all learners who come to the Centre.
