We've been busy bees of late uploading lots of videos and photos for your enjoyment from both Study United FC and Study Heslam.
The most recent video was footage was taken on Monday when something rare happened at Glanford Park. The floodlights, which shine brightly over an evening fixture at the football club were brought down for cleaning and bulb replacement. The video shows how the whole floodlight was taken down in just 5 minutes with a clever (and unbelieveably small!) hydraulic device which gradually and safely lowered it. You can also find pictures of the event on our Study United FC Picasa Feed.
Another video added yesterday was of Brigg Primary School. Some of their pupils visited us as part of the Corus Goal Challenge, focusing on the construction of a stable structure made from paper and glue. This video shows just how incredibly strong well-made structures can be, but demonstrates that every structure has a limit. This one was truely TESTED TO DESTRUCTION! The video was the first one we've uploaded in full 1080p high definition using our new Canon 550D digital SLR camera. We hope to upload more videos of this quality in future.
Finally, at Study Heslam, photos from Luddington and Garthorpe's 'Let's Get Cooking' day have been uploaded to the Study Heslam Picasa Feed. The pupils and staff came to learn more about cooking methods and techniques which were given a World Cup theme, resulting in them creating four different dishes from around the world.
Keep your eyes peeled for more fabulous content from our learners; if you want to know straight away when we've uploaded something new then sign up to our RSS feeds or scubscribe to our YouTube channels.

Ealand visit Study Heslam
Publicity
04/05/2010 - - News Item 133
Last week saw us entertain our friends from the community of Ealand. Linda, June and the gang have supported our study support centres for years, raising hundreds of pounds for our cause. As a thank you to them we invited them to Study Heslam to take part in a cooking activity we normally deliver to the children and young people. As always, fun was had by all and some wonderful healthy dishes were created and enjoyed by the group.
We have put photos from the day on our new Study Heslam Picasa Web Album account which you can view by clicking here or by clicking the link on the media bar.

'Meat' our Sponsors
Publicity
16/03/2010 - - News Item 132
Local butchers T. Hebdige & Son have kindly agreed to sponsor the study centres with a variety of quality meat and poultry specifically for cooking activities.
Every week children and young people who attend our centres have the chance to plan, prepare and cook a variety of meals giving them essential life skills. The cookery sessions build up their confidence and teach them the importance of a healthy, balanced diet. Recipes have included chicken stir fry, stuffed peppers, sausage casserole and shepherd's pie.
Cooking is an activity with many cross curricular links, for example, English skills are developed through creating menus and writing food reviews. Maths skills are tested through looking at quantities of ingredients, portion sizes and nutritional values. Creativity also comes into play; presenting the food on a plate in an attractive way helps to increase the appeal of a dish. Finally, collaboration and social skills are progressed during the activity; sitting down at the table together to eat the meal is important.
The butchers, located at Old Brumby Street, off Brumby Corner in Scunthorpe have been in business since 1954 serving the local community with fresh provisions and high quality meat. To publically thank the business for their generosity we sent centre teacher Michael and one of our learners, Adam, for a photo call.
We’d like to put on record our thanks for their support of our cause and hope that our partnership is sustained long into the future.

CENTRE TO OFFER NEW CLAiT
Learning Programme News
24/02/2010 - - News Item 131
Study United FC is to offer its first accredited qualification to students after becoming a registered centre for New CLAiT through OCR.
New CLAiT, given its full title of “Computer Literacy and Information Technology” is a qualification designed to recognise the skills, knowledge and understanding of IT users everywhere, whether in employment, education or training. Courses leading to a New CLAiT Level 1 qualification will equip learners with the basic range of transferable skills necessary to meet the demands of the modern workplace and is a stepping stone to further qualifications in ICT.
The qualification can be obtained through learners successfully completing assessments in three units to achieve certification or five units to gain the diploma. Each unit allows learners to become proficient in file management and document production, creation of advertising material using desktop publishing software, accounting with spreadsheets and even development of websites amongst others.
Brian Ayre, tutor in charge of the personalised learning programme, Reaching for Success (RfS), is preparing to deliver the course to young people. “Computer literacy is an essential part of modern day working practice so being able to offer this course to our learners will benefit them in their search for employment in an increasingly difficult jobs market. Once complete, they will receive an industry-recognised qualification” Brian explained. “We are viewing this as a whole family approach, involving them alongside their children, thereby encouraging intergenerational learning.”
As part of the preparations, Brian has experienced the course first hand, successfully completing the first two units under the watchful eye of the eLearning, Marketing and ICT Manager, whilst supporting the centre’s policy of Continued Professional Development. Brian’s initial aim is to achieve the New CLAiT diploma at which point the qualification will be offered as part of RfS.
Once interest has been established, the longer term strategy is to consider the delivery of other OCR vocational qualifications in digital media.
For more information about our delivery of New CLAiT contact us on (01724) 747686 or email brian.ayre@studyunited.org.uk .
