Double Club
What is Double Club?
Double Club is an innovative programme that generates excitement for learning by focussing on football using the enthusiasm for sport to motivate pupils in the classroom. It’s a completely unique way of improving fundamental skills in literacy, numeracy, speaking and listening and ICT, using a cross-curricular theme of football. Double Club challenges children to emulate their football heroes and ‘Head for Success’ So why use the word ‘Double’?
The programme has two key aims:
- To improve confidence and attainment in the classroom.
- To encourage participation in team sport, especially football.
How does it work?
- Students are taught in groups of up to 15.
- Each group has at least 2 hours of classroom sessions a week. The classroom is branded with Scunthorpe United merchandise and football memorabilia.
- Each group has at least 1 hour a week of planned sports activity led by Scunthorpe United Sports and Education Trust (SUFC Trust) coaches. The SUFC Trust will deliver 1 hour quality coaching in a fun, safe learning environment.
- Classroom sessions make use of inspirational resources, match day programmes, highlights of recent matches and exclusive match photographs.
- Effort, achievements and team work are rewarded with Golden Goals. The pupil(s) at the top of the league are rewarded with prizes.
Who is it aimed at?
- Double Club is ideally aimed at Years 7. It supports children who need support with the transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3
- However, because of its universal appeal of football, the Double Club can be successfully run as a ‘key skill booster’ for Years 8 and 9.
What will it bring to your school?

- Activities are fun and competitive, concentrating on raising fundamental literacy and numeracy skills.
