DISHES FROM AFAR - 24/06/2009

As part of an investigation into healthy food from around the world, Study Heslam learners have this week whirled up a four dishes which were presented to officials at Heslam Park, the home of Scunthorpe R.U.F.C and Scunthorpe Town Cricket Club as part of the ‘Iron Inspire’ project through Reaching for Success.

The ‘Iron Inspire’ project, funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and European Social Fund (ESF), targets young people who are potentially at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training) after leaving school. Working in partnership with the Grimsby Institute, the aim of the project is to build confidence and promote improved self esteem through an interactive curriculum.

Leading up to this practical session, one of the learners, Bradley (14), looked at food trends in different countries which were usually linked towards climate and access to natural resources. For example, a typical diet for the Portuguese included plenty of fish and potatoes. Bradley used this background research to help put together the menu.

This menu catered for 4 nationalities involved in professional sport (Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal, Fabio Capello – Italy, Mike Blair – Scotland and Jonny Wilkinson - England). The investigation looked at sources of energy in foods, focusing particularly on the healthiness of fast food outlets. Bradley produced a questionnaire to club employees about their diets, identifying what nutrition was potentially missing and what sorts of food could provide the healthy balance required.

The investigation culminated in a frantic few hours in the Study Heslam kitchen to produce Cream of Potato Soup, Bangers and Mash, Spaghetti Carbonara and Flapjack with fresh custard for dessert. With the help of another learner, Tom (13), the four course meal was presented to the Scunthorpe Rugby Club Chairman, Louie Clayton. Mr Clayton was surveyed by Bradley and Tom after sampling each dish, asking questions about the presentation of them, quality of the cooking and any ways in which the dishes could have been made better. The Chairman stated that the food was well presented and very tasty, with all the ingredients coming together well.

A few members of the Scunthorpe Probus Club also visited the centre to experience the culinary delights, congratulating the youngsters on their dishes.

Andy Graham, tutor for the project commented: “Bradley has demonstrated a great increase in self-esteem and his confidence is a lot higher than when he first started the project. As these were the original aims of the project, it’s proved successful. Brad’s quality of work has been excellent throughout his three months with us and we hope this will continue back in school.”
